Minnesota high school football and volleyball are back on.

The Minnesota State High School League Monday morning approved a plan to start both sports  season early next month.  The decision comes after the league had pushed them back to a spring season because of coronavirus concerns.

Practice for both sports begins on Sept. 28.

The prep football season will be ten weeks long, starting the weekend of Oct. 9-10, with each team playing six games.  Postseason games are to be determined at a later date.

Volleyball matches start Oct. 8, with teams playing 14 dual matches over an 11-week span.

The MSHL board meeting had more than 400 people listening.

Members voted 15-3 to restart the football season after voting 14-4 to approve fall volleyball.

The change in direction from the MSHSL comes after a survey taken by 394 Minnesota high schools showed 76 percent in favor of a fall volleyball season, and 80 percent in favor of a fall football season.

The decision to postpone volleyball and football was made in August, with the MSHSL board allowing soccer, cross country, girl's tennis and girl's swimming to continue in the fall.

A normal fall sports season for the MSHSL is very lucrative. The board forecasted revenues of $814,722. If there are no fall sports this season, they forecast to lose $466,000. If both fall and winter sports are canceled, they will be driven to a $3.2 million deficit.  This move will save at least a portion of that revenue.

News Alert: The @MSHSL Board of Directors approved a motion to return football to the fall activities season. The move is effective Sept. 28. The motion calls for a 10-week season with six regular-season games. Postseason, TBA. #mshsl @MSHSLTim
