Becker County authorities got a report of a possible drowning at Long Bridge at Dead Shot Bay in Detroit Lakes on Saturday night.

When officers arrived, they were told a 3 year old child had fallen from the bridge into the water.  The child's father jumped into the water to help the child.  The father began to struggle while keeping the child above water.  Bystanders went into the water and brought the child to shore, but the man never resurfaced.

Officers from the Detroit Lakes Police Department and Becker County Sheriff's Office, along with St Mary's EMS personnel immediately began searching for the victim.  About a half an hour later, with the help of a fisherman and the Becker County Dive Rescue Team, the victim was located.  He was taken to St Mary's where he was pronounced dead.

The child was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Authorities released the name of the victim on Sunday.  He was 31 year old Christopher Franklin Nicholas Schultz of Frazee, MN
