Edina and Warroad are the top seeds of the MSHSL girl's hockey state tournament in brackets revealed Saturday morning.

The Hornets, who won last season's Class AA state title and upset top-seeded Blake in Friday's Section 6 final, open quarterfinal play Thursday at 6 p.m. against tournament newcomer East Ridge.

Warroad last won the girl's hockey small-school crown in 2011, and takes on St. Paul United in the Wednesday 6 p.m. quarterfinal match.

The Class A tournament starts Wednesday at the Xcel Energy Center in downtown St. Paul, with the large school quarterfinals the following day at the home of the Minnesota Wild.

This is Minnesota's 25th girl's hockey state tournament, which started out as a single-class, four-team championship in 1995.

Apple Valley won the inaugural tournament at Aldrich Arena in Maplewood, beating South St. Paul 2-0.

Since then, the tournament has been played at Warner Coliseum on the Minnesota State Fairgrounds and the University of Minnesota's Ridder Arena.

The event became a two-class tournament in 2002, and all championship games were moved to the Xcel Energy Center in downtown St. Paul in 2006.

Consolation games this year are taking place for the first time at TRIA Rink in St. Paul, the Wild's practice facility and 1,200-seat home arena for the Minnesota Whitecaps professional women's team and Hamline University's hockey teams.
