They've reached 20 wins.

But that's not enough for the University of Minnesota women's basketball team and head coach Lindsay Whalen, in more ways than one.

Destiny Pitts scored 26 points and Kaniesha Bell added 23 to lead the Gophers to an 82-63 win over Michigan State in their final regular season game Sunday at Williams Arena.

The win in front of an announced crowd of 7,707 broke a two-game losing streak and sent the Gophers into the Big Ten tournament on a high note.

The Gophers (20-9, 9-9 Big Ten) open the league tournament in Indianapolis against Indiana on Thursday, and another win will make Whalen's first season leading her alma mater even more successful.

But a victory over the Hoosiers will also bring the Gophers a step closer to a berth in the NCAA tournament. The bid was something that appeared assured last month with a six-game winning streak that came to a crashing halt when the Gophers squandered a pair of late leads before Sunday's win.

The Gophers took control of the game against the Spartans (19-10, 9-9) with a 17-6 run in the second quarter that helped build an 11-point halftime lead.

Jasmine Brunson scored 13 points for the Gophers, with Taiye Bello scoring ten and adding ten rebounds for her 11th double-double of the season.

The winner of Friday's Gophers-Hoosiers game takes on second-seed Iowa, one of four teams that received double-byes in the Big Ten tournament.
