Ten years after trees, juniper leaves will grace Target Field batters eye

The Twins believe they got it right this time.

Ballclub officials announced Monday plans to install a "living wall" of sea-green juniper plants on the batter's eye beyond the center field wall at Target Field.

This is where pine trees were planted in 2010, only to be removed before the next season following complaints from batters that the trees affected their view of pitched baseballs.

“Since the removal of the original trees, which were part of Target Field’s batter’s eye in 2010, the Twins have been searching for the right solution which balances playability and aesthetics," said Twins president Dave St. Peter. "We believe the living wall concept delivers on both fronts, while further enhancing the ballpark’s sustainability platform.”

Crews will start building the living wall later this month.

The junipers will be installed each March and removed at season’s end, to be stored locally within a nursery for winter care.

The Twins open the 2019 season at Target Field on March 28 against the Cleveland Indians.
