6-time major champion Nick Faldo is already scheduled to be a part of CBS Television's coverage of the first PGA Tour stop in the Twin Cities in 50 years when the 3M Open begins 3rd round play Saturday, July 6th (first two rounds on the Golf Channel). But on July 1st, he'll be at another classic Twin Cities course, Interlachen Country Club, to help raise money for a good cause.
Tuesday afternoon on WCCO Radio, Faldo, who won 3 Masters and 3 British Opens in his storied career, joined Chad Hartman to talk about the event, and golf in general.
"First, after the buildup you gave me, I better bring a clean shirt," Faldo joked. The Hall of Fame golfer is one of the biggest celebrities participating in "Taste For the Tour", an event designed around food by Taste of the NFL creator Wayne Kostroski.
Faldo will be joined by event emcee and former Viking Matt Birk, former Viking Ben Leber will handle the live auction and other celebrities will be introduced by NBC Sports reporter and former WCCO Radio host Michele Tafoya. Proceeds will benefit Tee Off Against Hunger, with 100% of donations delivered to VEAP, a social services organization based in Bloomington that promotes and provides access to healthy foods for those in need.
Chad Hartman, speaking on his show Tuesday, said about Taste of the NFL founder Wayne Kostroski, "He is truly one of the best citizens we have in this area. His charitable endeavors never end." Kostroski also helped create WCCO Radio's annual "Let's Kick Hunger Day" radiothon, which helps raise over $250,000 each year for Second Harvest Heartland.
Cavner and the 3M Open were hopeful they could get Tiger Woods to appear, but the 16 time Major-winner said after his appearance at the U.S. Open that he would be enjoying some family time and "playing at home", before teeing it up for the British Open in a few weeks. But Hollis is not giving up. "We tried for years to get this tournament, and I'm not giving up on Tiger until Friday at 5:00!", which is the cutoff time for players to enter.
Other players scheduled to appear include fan favorite Phil Mickelson, Jason Day, Bryson DeChambeau and Patrick Reed, who famously went head-to-head with Rory McIlroy at Hazeltine during the 2016 Ryder Cup.
