One man is dead after he somehow fell onto light rail tracks and was struck by a moving Green Line train near the University of Minnesota campus.

The man is identified a 68-year-old Charles Donald, and his family went to the station on Sunday to release balloons and remember him.

The collision happened about 1:20 Saturday morning as the westbound Green Line train was leaving the Stadium Village station, according to Metro Transit's Howie Padilla.

"The man fell into the train and was pulled under," said Padilla. "We are looking at video, trying to talk with any witnesses who might have been around, trying to piece together what the man was doing to cause him to stumble into the train that way."

Donald reportedly was caught between two trains that were joined together on the Green Line.
