City crews on Monday closed a Minneapolis navigation center that was established for homeless people staying in an encampment adjacent to Hiawatha Avenue.

The facility opened in December on Cedar Avenue in south Minneapolis and at one point housed 170 people.

There were fewer than 40 on site last week, and city officials gave them the weekend to find a new place to stay.

With the navigation center closed down, permanent housing will be built on the site.
