UPDATE (8/26/19 4:30 p.m.)

The Sherburne County Sheriff's Office has arrested an Elk River man they say admitted to throwing dozens of screws on county roads.

The 63-year-old man is in jail awaiting formal charges and a first court date.

According to the department, the arrest was made after a caller reported seeing a gray Jeep SUV near a mobile home park in Zimmerman that matched the description put out by the Big Lake Police Department seeking tips and offering a cash reward Monday morning.

The department says they found the man, who had a 5-pound box of screws in the car. The motive is not known.

There is now a cash reward being offered for information leading to the arrest of a person who Big Lake police say has been throwing screws out his car window, the screws causing substantial damage to a number of cars in the northwest metro.

Big Lake Police Chief Joel Scharf says two people saw a man in a jeep, tossing the screws from his vehicle on Sunday.

"It's so persistent, it's just strange, because this is happening, two-three times a day in some days," said Scharf. "We've probably taken at least eighty reports from people that have had damage done to their vehicles."

The debris has also damaged several Big Lake police squad cars.

"I've had four screws taken out of my own squad car," said Scharf. "It's much more than just causing tires to deflate, it's got the potential to harm people and interfere with their livlihood."

The Big Lake police department is asking for help because they've been unable to find the source, despite putting officers out on surveillance in unmarked cars

Since the Facebook post, the reward has grown to $1400.

"Somebody knows who's doing it," Scharf said.  "Eventually, we're going to catch them."
