A protest rally in at the Hennepin County Detention Center in downtown Minneapolis turned destructive late Monday night and early Tuesday morning, with sheriff’s deputies taking 11 people in custody.

The group was protesting the police shooting of Jacob Blake on Sunday in Kenosha, Wisc.

Sheriff Dave Hutchinson says demonstrators broke windows at the facility across the street from Minneapolis city hall while threatening to breach the security of the jail.

One officer reportedly suffered a broken hand during the altercation.

The crowd grew to about 100 people before finally starting to leave the area around 1:00 a.m. after the arrests were made.

Officials say those people remain in custody on probable cause riot, damage to property, and unlawful assembly.

Demonstrators reportedly began gathering in downtown Minneapolis earlier Monday night and marched through the area, stopping at several locations before ending up at the county jail.

“We fully support peaceful protests, but we can not, and will not, allow demonstrators to destroy property or jeopardize the safety and security of our inmates, our deputies, and our jail,” said Hutchinson.

Minneapolis police and Metro Transit officers assisted county deputies during the unrest.
