Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison and his family are revealing that his mother, Clida Ellison, died in late March due to complications caused by COVID-19.
Ellison's son, Minneapolis city council member Jeremiah Ellison, penned an Op-Ed in the New York Times on Wednesday detailing how he learned last week that his grandmother died from COVID-19.
Ellison, the Ward 5 representative, also discussed injustices within the City of Minneapolis.
Ellison wrote, "Minneapolis is not unique in its use of redlining and restrictive covenants that kept blacks from owning property. Minneapolis is not unique in using the construction of highways to annihilate black neighborhoods. Minneapolis is not unique in placing its worst polluters in and near its black and brown neighborhoods. And unfortunately, we are also not unique in our failure to seriously seek a remedy to these harms."
Clida Ellison died March 26 at the age of 82. Her funeral was held in Detroit.
My brothers and I (Leonard, Brian, Tony and Eric) had a unbelievably cool mom, Clida Martinez Ellison. Smart, funny, tenacious, foodie, and so much more. Early this morning, she passed on. Prayers. Gratitude for her 81 years here with us; incredible person. pic.twitter.com/1wa4NyFf0i
