Becker public schools are open on Friday with crews bringing a lingering fire under control at the Northern Metals Recycling plant.

Earlier in the week, smoke bellowed from the fire, which began in a pile of smashed-up vehicles, and could be smelled in parts of the Twin Cities, some 45 miles southeast of Becker. Officials on Tuesday warned the public regarding possible breathing hazards in the smoke and advised those with respiratory issues are asked to stay inside or in a well ventilated area.

The Minnesota Department of Health and Minnesota Pollution Control Agency is gauging the fire's impact.

No injuries have been reported and no other buildings/equipment have been reported.
