Minneapolis city leaders Tuesday take another step toward putting the question of defunding the police department before voters in the fall.

The charter commission’s public safety work group meets at 4:00 p.m. to discuss the proposed charter amendment that was forwarded last month by a unanimous vote from city council members.

The plan to replace the Minneapolis police department with a department of community safety picked up steam following the death of George Floyd while in police custody on May 25.

A new agency would likely include a law enforcement division with licensed police officers.

The only way the plan can go through is if taxpayers vote to change the Minneapolis charter.

The agenda for Monday’s public safety work group includes setting a date for the next public hearing of the proposal.

There’s an August 21 deadline to include the charter amendment question on the November ballot.

While the Minneapolis city council has support for defunding the MPD, mayor Jacob Frey is against the plan, and says he doesn’t like the proposed amendment as it is now written.
