Seventh district congressman Collin Peterson is running for re-election.

The 15-term Democrat has been representing northwestern Minnesota since 1990 and is chair of the House Agriculture committee.

The district is touted as the most heavily pro-Trump of any House seat held by a Democrat anywhere, setting up one of the most high-profile campaigns of 2020.

Peterson released a statement:

"This wasn’t an easy decision for me because our country is so polarized right now, but that’s also why I want to ask the voters of western Minnesota to support me again. There aren’t many like me left in Congress. Rural Democrats are few and far between and I’m concerned that rural America is getting left behind.”

The likely Republican nominee is former state Sen. Michelle Fischbach, a conservative with roots in the anti-abortion movement who has already been endorsed by President Trump.

She already has strong support from key national GOP leaders who see the race as one of their best pickup opportunities.

Minnesota Republican party chair Jennifer Carnihan said in a statement that Peterson is "ignoring the writing on the wall" by seeking re-election.

In another statement, state DFL party chair Ken Martin said there is "no better fighter for farmers" than Peterson.

Trump won the seventh district by 31 points in the 2016 election.

Peterson is considered one of the more conservative Democrats in the US House, voting against impeaching President Trump while supporting gun rights.
