A lawsuit has been filed against the Edina school district after the mother of a former second-grade student says her son was forced to undergo an unauthorized strip-search.
The suit claims a strip and body-cavity search was conducted on the boy at Countryside Elementary during the 2017-18 school year after the boy was suspected of defecating on the floor of one of the school's restrooms.
The attorney for the child's mother says the school district's policy required parents to be told ahead of time, and to authorize any body search.
The parents were not told about the search, and were only told about it by the child several months after it happened.
"The child was quite traumatized by this event," said Marshal Tanick, the attorney for the child's mother. "The child has been getting therapy since the event occurred, and is no longer in the Edina school district."
The lawsuit seeks at least $50,000 in damages, and full access to the report the school district conducted on the incident.
Administrators with the Edina School District says it cannot comment on the lawsuit, and it denies what is alleged in it.
