Officials with the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference are close to making an announcement on the fall sports season, which is in jeopardy of being wiped out because of the coronavirus pandemic.
"We anticipate making an announcement regarding fall sports on Tuesday," MIAC commissioner Dan McKane told WCCO radio on Saturday.
Sources tell WCCO radio that the Division Three league will move football, soccer, and volleyball to the spring... with cross country, golf, and tennis proceeding as scheduled.
The MIAC has already canceled all non-conference games for football, soccer, and volleyball because of the coronavirus pandemic.
One member school, Carleton College in Northfield, earlier this month canceled its entire fall sports schedule.
Among the highlights of the MIAC's current fall sports calender is the final scheduled football matchup between Saint John's and St. Thomas on Nov. 7 at US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.
Ticket sales for that matchup, which has drawn more than 16,000 in each of the past five years, are on hold.
St. Thomas is heading into its last year in the MIAC, whose member school presidents involuntarily removed the St. Paul-based school for competitive reasons.
Saint John's officials say demand for tickets is "off the charts" for what is scheduled to be the final football game between the small-school rivals.
