The Brooklyn Park Police Department along with the Minnesota State Patrol are investigating a fatal crash involving a school bus and a bicyclist.

It happened about 6:30am near the intersection of Zane Avenue and 65th Avenue North.

"Officers arrived at the scene and found a bicycle had been struck by a school bus with children on it," said Mark Bruley, Deputy Chief of Brooklyn Park Police. "The driver of the school bus is cooperating and is working with law enforcement," he said.

He said there were young children on the bus at the time, and they were taken to a local charter school.

"It's a pretty traumatic experience for them, and it's important to help them deal with what occurred and we're hoping that between us and the school we can get them some special attention."

The State Patrol is investigating what led up to the crash.

"We know that the school bus was heading east on 65th, trying to go south on Zane and we're trying to figure out how that bike got in front of the bus."

He said because it was a commercial vehicle, they will have to determine whether the driver was operating correctly and is it safe to continue to operate.

The road is expected to be closed for several hours.
