Authorities say the driver of an SUV may have been drunk when he ran a stop sign and was killed in a crash with another vehicle late Saturday night in northwestern Minnesota.

According to the state patrol, there is evidence at the scene near Thief River Falls that Gary Austad, 38, of Bronson had been drinking at the time of the collision.

The report indicates Austad was traveling north on County Road 22 when he failed to stop at the stop sign at about 11:24 p.m. Saturday, colliding with a car headed east on Highway 1.

Authorities also say Austed was not wearing a seat belt.

Two people in the other car were Rita Giddings, 31, and Gabriel Amani Reese, 9, both from Roseau.

They are hospitalized, and the state patrol says they were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
