A Monday morning fire at the Tawfiq Islamic Center is being ruled as accidental.
The fire broke out around 12 a.m. Monday. When the Minneapolis Fire Department arrived, they found a window broken out and flames in the entryway of the mosque, which was unoccupied.
Tuesday morning, the fire department reported the fire was accidental and electrical and nature.
The fire caught the attention of DFL Rep. Ilhan Omar who tweeted, "My heart goes out to the congregants of the Tawfiq Islamic Center in North Minneapolis, which was damaged in a fire last night. Hate crimes have been on the rise in our state. State and federal officials must fully investigate whether this was an act of arson."
A GoFundMe has been set-up to help the mosque rebuild.
