A man is hospitalized after he was shot by Brooklyn Park Police today during an exchange of gunfire in a Walmart parking lot.

Officers responded to the Walmart on a report that some customers were acting suspiciously, according to Chief Craig Enevoldsen. Officers confronted one of the men in the parking lot, along with two other suspects who were inside a car, and a struggle ensued, Enevoldsen said.

According to Enevoldsen, the man fled toward the car, went inside it, and came back out shooting at the police officer who was pursuing him. The man continued to fire as he tried to run away, and two officers turned fire.

The man was hit, went down and then officers handcuffed him. He was then taken to the hospital with what Enevoldsen said were non life threatening injuries. The officers were uninjured and no bystanders were harmed, police said.

When aksed how many bullets were fired, Enevoldsen responded by saying “A lot.”

“It started out the vehicle and went all the way to the southern end of the parking lot,” he said.

The other two suspects were also taken into custody.
