A 23-year-old Minneapolis man identified with facial recognition software is charged with first-degree assault in a beating of an elderly man.
Prosecutors say it started when the 75-year-old victim asking that Leroy Davis-Miles and his friends keep their voices down on the bus.
The victim is in critical condition with a serious brain injury, and the Hennepin County attorney's office says he may not survive.
Bus surveillance showed Davis-Miles becoming "hostile" toward the victim and threatening to beat him when he got off the bus. The criminal complaint states that surveillance video and witnesses saw Davis-Miles punch him once. The victim fell backward and hit his head on the pavement.
Prosecutors say Davis-Miles and another companion "shook hands in a congratulatory manner" and then several rummaged through the unconscious man's pockets.
Davis-Miles is expected to make his first court appearance Tuesday. The technology was used to "put a name to the person seen in the video," according to the Attorney's Office. He was arrested Thursday and a search warrant turned up the shoes, pants and jacket seen in the video.
