Minneapolis Park Board to limit homeless encampments

MPRB

With more than 300 tents still situated at Powderhorn Park in Minneapolis, the Minneapolis Park Board on Wednesday night voted to restrict the size of homeless encampments at city parks to 25 tents.

The vote came after complaints surrounding the homeless encampments, specifically at Powderhorn Park, where crimes have continued since early June.

With the vote, 25 tents will be allowed at 20 different parks. According to the park board, the amount of parks where tents are located has been reduced already from over 40 to around 30. The vote comes a month after the park board approved to let the homeless stay in parks temporarily.

The Minneapolis Park Board also approved a measure Wednesday night that is the first step to allow people to go topless at city park property, without being ticketed. Minnesota law permits anyone to go topless, but a Minneapolis park board ordinance says showing "female breasts" is grounds for an indecent exposure citation at city parks and parkways.

The language of the ordinance is under criticism and up for appeal. A hearing on the issue will be held next month.
