A controversial plan to reorganize the Minneapolis school district was approved Tuesday night on a 6-to-3 vote.
The Minneapolis School Board approved the Comprehensive District Design plan that aims to address racial disparities, reduce the achievement gap, and align the district better financially.
According to MPS, four of the five models will reshape boundaries and centralize magnet schools. The plan aims to emphasize "community schools" to keep neighborhoods, communities, and schools together.
The redistricting plan will take effect starting with the 2021-2022 school year.
MPS Superintendent Ed Graff will address the vote during a news conference on Wednesday.
Planning for the CDD began in Decemeber 2017. Following months of study, MPS decided to produce and design large-scale systems to elimnate structures, policies, and practices that create and reinforce disparities for students of color and low income students.
