A star from the 'Miracle on Ice' Olympic hockey team is in jail facing felony assault and gun charges.
61 year old Mark Pavelich was arrested last week at his Lutsen home following what police say was an altercation with a neighbor. He allegedly attacked the neighbor with a metal pole after accusing him of "spiking his beer" after a fishing outing.
Police also say he was in possession of a sawed-off shotgun with the serial numbers rubbed off.
The famously reclusive Pavelich was a standout at the University of Minnesota Duluth, and spent a handful of seasons in the NHL. But he's best known for being a member of the 1980 US Olympic Hockey Team that stunned the Soviet Union before going on to win gold in Lake Placid. Pavelich assisted Mike Eruzione game winning goal againt the USSR.
In 2014, Pavelich sold his gold medal for $262,900 at auction.
A judge has ordered a competency hearing for Pavelich. His next court date is scheduled for late October.
