MPD chief Maderia Arradondo called it "tragic and sensless" violence.

One person is dead and 11 others wounded in an overnight shooting incident in uptown Minneapolis.

It happened around 12:37 Sunday morning when authorities received numerous calls of shooting on Hennepin Avenue near Lake Street.

Police say shots were fired on the 2900 block of Hennepin Avenue by individuals who then proceeded north.

According to the MPD report, people in the area scattered when the shots rang out and the suspects fled the scene when officers arrived.

The windows of several businesses were shattered by the bullets that flew through one of the most popular night-time areas of the Twin Cities.

Arradondo said late Sunday morning that the first officer arrived at the scene three minutes after the call went out, adding that he doesn't believe the act is an extension of the unrest in reaction to last month's death of George Floyd in police custody.

"I certainly do not want to disrespect Mr. Floyd's death and have that be any connection to that," Arradondo said.

All of the people who were shot are adults.

One man died at HCMC and the rest are hospitalized and expected to recover.

There are no arrests.

There have been a number of shootings since Floyd's death touched off protests and riots in the Twin Cities and around the US.

"We are certainly doing our best to address that," Arradondo said.. "This is going to take more than just the Minneapolis Police Department.
