The Mall of America plans to permanently layoff 211 of its employees beginning September 30 and extend furloughs of another 178 employees past October 1 as its COVID-19 recovery continues at a slow pace.
Officials with the mall said Thursday that they had notified the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development about the layoffs. Bloomington Mayor Tim Busse was also notified of the news.
The mall reopened to the public for the first time during the COVID-19 pandemic on June 10. Doors to the Nickelodeon Universe theme park opened in August to a reduced capacity of 250 people.
News of the layoffs and extended furloughs comes after a report in May revealed the Mall of America had missed two payments on their $1.4 billion mortgage due to state-mandated efforts to deter the impact of COVID-19.
Positions impacted by the permanent layoffs were not disclosed.
