It’s all hands on deck at the Second Harvest Heartland warehouse in Brooklyn Park.  The regular volunteers who usually pack the food are being asked to stay home to stop the spread of the coronavirus, so the staff has stepped in  to help.

“We feel wonderful,” said Nora Dragich, who normally works in the with the volunteers but today is one of them, “We are having a great day and getting a lot of work done.”

They are following social distancing guidelines as they pack boxes of potatoes, onions and other items to help everyone get through this crisis.

“It’s an absolute honor,” she said. “We’ve asked people to come in and the response has been great.”

As the number of Minnesotans go without paychecks,  the demand for food is increasing as well, abd many people will become eligible for Supplemental Nutrition Program or SNAP, according to Allison O’Toole, the CEO of Second Harvest Heartland.

The organization provides food shelves across the state.

“Many of them are open and they are seeing incredible need in their communities,” she said.

O’Toole said while they are not taking volunteers at this time, she encourages people to donate online, at secondharvestheartland.org
