Residential coordinated garbage collection in St. Paul will stay as-is due to a "yes" vote on a Tuesday.

The measure passed with 62.53 percent of voters casting a yes vote compared to 37.47 percent voting no.

In 2018, the city moved to do away with residents choosing their own trash providers. Instead, the St. Paul implemented a new system where providers were assigned specific neighborhoods. On Tuesday, Ordinance 18-39 asked voters to approve the creation of new rules for garbage and trash collection in St. Paul, including changes to how the service is paid for.

Leading up to the vote, spirited conversations took place on both sides of the argument.

One ugly side of the vote included racist and threatening messages directed towards St. Paul mayor Melvin Carter, who advocated for the measure.

Carter tweeted out his enthusiasm following Tuesday's vote.
