St. Paul police are investigating a shooting that occured outside the  Minnesota State Fairgrounds on Monday night, with witnesses saying the shooting occurred after a car hit a pedestrian following a series of fights.

It's not known if the altercations are related.

With lawmakers back in St. Paul on Wednesday for hearings on the state Human Services agency, Gov. Walz said they should begin discussing ways to curb gun violence.

"I welcome the hearing on DHS, but spend the afternoon on gun violence, for goodness sakes" Walz said after visiting with children attending the first day of classes at Sheridan Hills Elementary School in Richfield.

"If you're going to make the time to come back, let's do something on this."

Walz said he refuses to accept dealing with gun violence as the norm.

Officers arrived and found a chaotic scene surrounding a gravely injured 19-year-old woman lying in one of the northbound lanes of Snelling Avenue.

She was breathing but unresponsive. St. Paul Fire medics were called to the scene and they transported her to Regions Hospital, where she is in critical condition.

Witnesses reported that there had been a fight in the area just before the woman somehow ended up in the road and was struck by a passing vehicle. The driver of the vehicle initially stopped but left the scene after bystanders began kicking and hitting his vehicle. He drove a short distance away, pulled over and called 911.

He is cooperating with investigators, who report no signs of impairment.

A short time later, several gunshots rang out about a block south of the crash scene as officers were rerouting traffic off of Snelling Avenue at the intersection of Midway Parkway. There were several officers in the immediate vicinity, and they ran toward the gunfire in an effort to find the shooter or shooters and help any victims.

"It was dangerous, we're lucky that more people weren't injured or killed," said Linders.

One adult male was found suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to Regions Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. A short time later another victim arrived at United Hospital suffering from a gunshot wound and a third arrived at Regions Hospital with a gunshot wound.

One man who was shot is 20 years old, the other two are 18. All were treated and are expected to survive, police said.

There are no arrests.

The case remains open and active and investigators are asking anyone with information to call 651-291-1111.
