A student at Bloomington Jefferson High School is in stable condition following a stabbing at the school Tuesday afternoon.
Bloomington police were called to the school shortly after 12 p.m. on the report of two female students who had gotten into a fight. One of the students had a knife and stabbed the victim multiple times.
Bloomington police chief Jeff Potts says the fight was quickly broken up.
"Our school liaison officer along with other staff at the high school broke up the fight within seconds," Potts said. "That's when we realized the girl had been stabbed multiple times."
The victim was taken to Fairview Southdale hospital after the assault. The other student was taken into custody.
Potts says this is a rare event for Bloomington schools.
"I haven't been to an incident like this, so it's concerning not only to the school staff, but to the parents and to everyone else," he said.
The school was put on lock down during the investigation and Potts credits the school for keeping students, staff, and parents informed on what was going on.
No charges have been announced in the case.
