The Minnesota Department of Health today confirmed a third case of the coronavirus: an Anoka County resident in their 30s who is now hospitalized and is in critical condition.
Officials say the patient was likely exposed through contact with international travelers and first showed signs of the virus on Feb. 28. They went to the doctor on March 9, where they were administered a test that returned a positive result.
The health department is working with the Anoka County Public Health and other partners to identify and contact all those who may have come in contact with the infected person. These people will be asked to quarantine themselves for 14 days from their exposure and will be monitored for fever and respiratory symptoms.
"We are at the beginning of a Coronavirus winter," said University of Minnesota Dr. Michael Osterholm. "This is going to roll out for weeks and weeks to come yet. I worry because I think most people are looking at this like a blizzard, where basically you shelter in place for a few days, make sure you have enough food, and we will all be back to work in a couple of days, but that's not the case here."
Officials again stressed the importance of all Minnesotans continuing to do those things that can limit the spread of the coronavirus, including:
- Stay home and away from others if you are sick.
- Cover your coughs and sneezes with your elbow or a tissue.
- Wash your hands frequently for 20 seconds with soap and water.
- Avoid touching your face throughout the day.
