The Twins begin a three-game series against the Detroit Tigers Friday night at Target Field with a firmer grip on the AL Central lead.

With the second-place Cleveland Indians getting swept in a three-game series by the Mets in New York, including a 2-0 loss last night, the Twins are now 3 1/2 games up in the standings.

The Indians host Kansas City this weekend.

Since dropping out of first place on Aug. 12, the Twins have gained four games on the Tribe and returned to the top of the division.

The Twins are 6-3 this season against the last-place Tigers, and will face them ten more times before the end of the season.

Here are the pitching matchups for the weekend series:

  • Friday:  Jose Berrios (10-6, 3.37) vs. Dre VerHagen (3-2, 6.67), 7:10 p.m.
  • Saturday: Kyle Gibson (11-6, 4.40) vs. Edwin Jackson (3-6, 8.46), 6:20 p.m.
  • Sunday: Martín Pérez (8-5, 4.60) vs. TBA

The Tigers are coming off a four-game series in Houston, their only win coming at the expense of their former star pitcher Justin Verlander.

Since winning two in a row in Kansas City earlier this month, Detroit has lost nine of 12.
