A 31-year-old man who has had contact with the police in the past is in custody after holding off officers for several hours early this morning in a hotel in Brooklyn Park.

SWAT and crisis management teams were called to the La Quinta Inn at 7011 Northland Circle, just east of the intersection of highway 169 and Interstate 694.

Officials say Bryan Charles Westerlund was arrested just before 10 a.m. Friday, about seven hours after the first call of a domestic situation came in to Brooklyn Park police.

According to Brooklyn Park deputy police chief Mark Bruley, a woman had been assaulted and threatened with a handgun while inside a room at the hotel.

"The officers tried to make contact with the suspect, who refused to cooperate," said Bruley, adding that Westerlund surrendered after two hours of negotiations."

Bruley says Westerlund faces charges of second-degree assault and domestic assault.

Westerlund was not armed when he was arrested, and hotel guests who were evacuated were allowed back into the building.

"The guests were really good about it," said Bruley. "We got them back as soon as we could."

The woman who was reportedly assaulted suffered what were called by police as minor injuries, and did not seek immediate medical attention.
