Attorneys for former Minneapolis Police officer Mohamed Noor have filed a motion for acquittal, in the first defense motion after the verdict.
Noor was convicted of third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter earlier this month in the shooting death of Justine Damond. The Australian woman was shot after calling police to report a possible assault outside her southwest Minneapolis home in July 2017.
In the 8-page motion, the attorneys argue that evidence at trial did not prove Noor "acted with a depraved heart," referencing the murder statute.
It also says that his "shock and actions" in the aftermath "reveal a man with a heavy conscience," and not someone "acting with disregard to the risk he was creating."
Noor is scheduled to be sentenced on the two charges June 8.
