We had two very different takes on President Trump's decision to assassinate Iranian General Qasem Soleimani. On the DFL side, St. Paul City Coucilmember Mitra Jalali, the state's first elected Iranian-American, joined The Chad Hartman Show, whle Republican Rep. Tom Emmer spoke to reporter Al Schoch.
While Jalali recognized that Soleimani Jalali acknowledged that Soleimani was involved in "heinous acts,” she questioned the decision to assassinate him, comparing it to the US decision to remove Saddam Hussein and invade Iraq.
“We have to question the type of reasoning that says someone was bad, and so we have to go and pursue the most extreme option for dealing with them. You could use that as a justification to get us into anything as a country that is extraordinarily costly in terms of American lives. That is how we got into the conflict in 2003.”
She also said it was "unacceptable" for Trump to claim that he had been acting in the best interest of the Iranian people, given his track record.
For his part, Emmer told News Talk 830 WCCO that he first must hear all the fact about the attack, and expects to be briefed as early as Wednesday in Washington.
While he said he wasn't going to "rush to judgment" on whether the attack was right or wrong, he also that "everybody agrees this was an appropriate move from a strategic standpoint."
