The decision to kill Iranian General Qasem Soleimani was, “far and away as the biggest strategic gamble President Trump has taken during his presidency,” according to the chief Washington correspondent for CBS News.
Veteran journalist Major Garrett, speaking in an interview Friday during the Chad Hartman show on News Talk 830 WCCO, said the President had, “made it clear publicly and privately to the Iranians” that the killing of an American contractor was a step too far, and that action, coupled with the attempted sacking of the US embassy, had “crossed red lines.”
“Trust me, George W. Bush had intel on his location, didn't do it. President Obama had intel on his location, didn't do it. President Trump for the longest time didn't do it, but now he has calculated in his mind that the Iranian leadership internally is politically weak,” Garrett told Hartman.
He continued:
“It is economically under stress and it is militarily unlikely to carry through the threats you're seeing on Twitter and through Foreign Ministry statements, et cetera, and that this will force the Iranians to knuckle under. I would describe this far and away as the biggest strategic gamble president Trump has taken during his presidency.”
