Did you see this pass by a former Gopher quarterback?

Phil Nelson is getting lots of attention on social media about completing a pass in a football game Sunday night.

It wasn't your typical pass attempt by the former Mankato West High School and Gopher quarterback:

....how?This may be the craziest completion ever. pic.twitter.com/6Ilyd9Sysz

Nelson is playing for the San Diego Fleet of the new Alliance of American Football, and his over-the-head, behind-the-back pass completion in traffic to tight end Gavin Escobar is being compared by some to no-look passes thrown by NFL most valuable player Patrick Mahomes.

The play went down officially as a one-yard loss, but it could have been worse.

“I hope I don’t get cut,” Nelson told the team's website. “I was trying to throw that ball away. When I heard, ‘Pass completed,’ I was like, ‘OK, thank you, God. Next play.' ’’

San Diego won the game, beating Atlanta 24-12.

Nelson completed 14 passes, including his no-look attempt, for 142 yards and one interception.

In 2011, Nelson was Minnesota's Mr. Football following his senior year at Mankato West and played two seasons with the Gophers.

With his playing time diminishing, Nelson left the Gophers and finished his college career at East Carolina.

He also had a high-profile run-in with the law after leaving the Gophers.

Nelson pleaded guilty to a fifth degree misdemeanor in a 2014 fight that left a man with permanent brain damage, and he later settled a civil suit with the man's family.
