The Minnesota Department of Public Safety is reporting that 111 people were arrested for DWI from New Year's evening to New Year's Day. 22 of the arrests were made before midnight and 89 were made after midnight.

We talked to Minnesota State Patrol spokesperson Gordon Shank about what happens when a person is pulled over and arrested.

"If someone is arrested for DWI, their vehicle is towed most of the time," Shank said. "And then they get processed at the local county jail."

A lot of people are not aware of that and other parts of the process, which includes getting a temporary drivers license which expires in 7 days.

"After that I think they don't realize that your license is revoked, and depending on how many DWI's you've had, that indicates how long your license is going to be revoked."

And adding insult to injury, you have to pay $680 to get your license back, and you have to retake the driver's test.

"People are also not aware of the fact that they are going to be booked into jail right away.  You will not be released to a sober party."

The cost of a DWI adds up quickly. There's the cost of the tow, ignition interlock, temporary license, and rising insurance rates.

"So when you start looking at all the these things, you're looking at between 5 to 10 thousand dollars when it's all said and done."
