The sentencing of the snowmobiler convicted in the death of an 8-year-old boy included emotional testimony from the child's family.

A judge setenced 46-year-old Eric Coleman of Chisago City to more than 12 years in prison.

It was last January when second-grader Alan Geisenkoetter Jr. was struck by the snowmobile operated by Coleman on Chicago Lake.

The boy died from his injuries while his father was hurt but survived on what started out to be a family ice-fishing trip.

More than a dozen family members confronted Coleman in the hearing, with the boy's mother tearfully telling him tha the crash "has caused a pain that can't be described in words."

Two months ago, Coleman was convicted of third-degree murder, drunken driving, criminal vehicular homicide and criminal vehicular operation.

Coleman apologized in court during Thursday's hearing.

His defense attorneys had asked the judge for a five-year sentence.
