A correctional officer is recovering after being stabbed by an inmate on Saturday afternoon at Minnesota's Correctional Facility in Rush City.

The Minnesota Department of Corrections is reporting that the staff was in in the middle of routine cell searches at about 3:20 p.m. when they encountered an inmate suspected of having homemade alcohol.

When officers approached, authorities say the inmate assaulted staff with a makeshift weapon commonly referred to as a shank.

One of the officers suffered "a puncture wound," but is expected to be okay. Three other officers who subdued the inmate were also injured.

All three were "evaluated and released" from an area hospital according to the DOC.
