Each week, the Humane Society of Minnesota stops by the News Talk 830 WCCO studios with an adoptable dog for our "Good Pup, Good Pick" segment with Cory Hepola. We ask the dog to choose between two bowls: The Vikings, and their opponent.
So far, those picks haven't panned out. The dogs are 3-7 picking games. But the picks are an afterthought.
The main goal is to find permanant homes for the dog. On that front, they're perfect, with each dog finding a new family.
Mary Tan is with the Humane Society of Minnesota, and joins Cory in studio to talk about our dogs. She talked to News Talk 830 WCCO about the importance of adopting dogs this time of year.
"Typically the number of adoptions that we do goes down during this time of year just because it gets colder," said Tan. "Kids are back in school, they're back in the swing of things and winter is upon us. A lot of people think, you know, I don't really want to go walk a dog when the weather's getting cold. But one thing you need to remember is that the number of homeless animals never stops when they come to our shelter. We really depend on wonderful people to come adopt our animals. And right now we have an amazing number of beautiful dogs and cats that are available for adoption. So if you're thinking about adopting a pet, you can find the perfect one now."
Each year, the Animal Humane Society of Minnesota cares for more than 22,000 animals in need and helps many more through other programs. There are four adoption centers in the Twin Cities.
The Humane Society, and other pet adoption programs throughout the state, give future pet owners plenty of options to choose from. Bhimani says that Minnesota is one of the most pet and adoption friendly states.
"Minnesota is one of the best states for adoption. In fact, more than 60% of Minnesotans own some sort of a pet. And that really reflects our adoption numbers because we have constant people wanting to adopt our wonderful dogs. And the only reason we can do that is thanks to the people who love animals."
There is also the issue of dogs that end up in Minnesota from southern states. Bhimani says it's an issue the Humane Society has to address.
"We have people who understand the importance of adoption of pets that come from the southern states. They have so many stray and homeless animals. They just have so many animals. They are unfortunately still having to euthanize for space. We want to help other parts of the country as well, in limiting pet overpopulation. And if everybody does their part in the country and adopts, we can stop pet overpopulation and Minnesota is one of the key states that is doing that. Thanks to the folks here."
