Brad Frost is out as the Gophers women's hockey coach after 19 seasons.

University of Minnesota Athletic Director Mark Coyle making that announcement Tuesday, adding that they'll start a nationwide search immediately for the next coach.

Frost led the Gophers to numerous WCHA, along with four national championships - 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016.

"Brad is a great coach and an even better person, which is why today is extremely difficult," announced Coyle. "This decision was made after a review of the program on and off the ice. We expect to contend at the highest level in every aspect of women's college hockey, and right now we are not doing that."

Gophers women's hockey finished 26-12-1 this season, their second straight season with 12 losses.

They were bounced from the NCAA tournament this past weekend in a 4-2 loss against the Northeastern Huskies.

"While change like this is never easy, now is the right time for a new voice to lead our program," Coyle continues. "This is the best coaching job in women's hockey, and we will immediately begin a nationwide search for our next head coach."
