Minnesota Gopher's starting quarterback Drake Lindsey is speaking out for the first time after he was arrested for underage possession of alcohol and possession of fake identification.
"Yeah, you know, as the leader of the football team, I understand I can't make those decisions," said Lindsey. "I've certainly grown a lot from them and learned a lot. I apologize to the administration, our staff, all the players, and I'll certainly grow from this and continue to."
Head coach PJ Fleck says they're handling the incident internally, and did not expand on any kind of disciplinary action against Lindsey, who was arrested last month in Arkansas.
"Drake's just got to make better decisions, just like all the players on our team," Fleck adds. "Take accountability for those decisions, learn from those decisions, and be better for it. That's the only thing you can do with your football team, is continue to educate him. And I know he'll be way better for it, and he has been."
Lindsey started throughout the 2025 season setting a record for most wins by a freshman. He also said his teammates have been supportive.
"Oh, they've been great," he said. "Reached out to them immediately, apologized, and then got back and apologized. They've had my back the whole time, so it's been great."
Fleck also said one of the roles he embraces as a college football coach is the chance to help young players make those better decisions.
"I think you all know me as an educator and a teacher," Fleck said. "Young people aren't perfect. They're going to make choices and decisions, and we have a saying in our program. You have the choice of the decision, you don't have a choice of the consequence, right? And this is how young men grow, and get better, and take accountability and he's done that. And he'll continue to do that."
The Gophers and Lindsey open the season on September 3 at Huntington Bank Stadium against Eastern Illinois.
