A major announcement from the 3M Open golf tournament Wednesday.

Fresh off the heels of the world's number one player Scotty Scheffler committing to play, former number one Jordan Spieth has been added to the field.

"Well, this is huge," says 3M Tournament Executive Director Hollis Cavner. "Anytime you can get Jordan Spieth to come play, and with his record and all the majors and everything else that he's won, he's an iconic player. And a great guy."

He's also a fan favorite, which equates to ticket sales.

"It creates so much interest with the fan base, and some people that might have been on the fence whether they were going to come out or not," says Cavner. "Now all of a sudden, you look at it and you go, you got the number one player in the world. You got a former number one who just committed, and all these other greats. We see an instant jump in, in sales."

It'll be the tournament debut for both Scheffler and Spieth. On Tuesday, Billy Horschel and Keith Mitchell also committed to playing. Horschel is a former FedEx Cup champion, and Mitchell is coming off a fourth place finish in the U.S. Open at Shinnecock. On Monday, former Masters champ Hideki Matsuyama joined the field.

2025 3M Open winner Kurt Kitayama will also be back.

Traditionally, the 3M has struggled to get the very top players in the PGA to commit. Much of that is due to where the 3M falls on the tour schedule, coming immediately after the Open Championship in the UK. The 154th playing is the week prior to the 3M at Royal Birkdale in northwest England.

Cavner, who works extremely hard to get players to Minnesota for the tournament, says adding players like Spieth, who has been in a long drought since his last win at the 2022 RBC Heritage in Hilton Head, adds a lot of buzz. This is shaping up to be the deepest, most talented field in 3M Open history, which dates back to 2019.

"I think we're going have a great, great golf course and great competition," Cavner adds. Jordan wants to get back to winning. That's his goal. I mean, he really wants to get back to winning events and he made that comment. He's like, you know, we got to want to play and he's close. He's really close. So I feel good about where we're at."

The 3M Open runs July 20 through the 26 at TPC Twin Cities in Blaine.
