World Number One Scottie Scheffler got all the publicity leading up to the 3M Open where he's playing for the first time, and kept it there after carding a six-under par 65 on Thursday to stand in third place. But he was eclipsed by midday Friday by a lesser name who had the round of his life.
Michael Kim carded the 15th 59 in PGA Tour history, making a 24-foot putt for birdie on the 18th hole at the 3M Open.
Kim birdied the final four holes of his bogey-free round at TPC Twin Cities to get to 14-under for the tournament.
Jake Knapp was the last to shoot 59 during the first round of the 2025 Cognizant Classic.
Kim, whose previous career low round was 62, made five straight birdies beginning on No. 3 and added three in a four-hole stretch beginning on No. 9. He sank a 12-footer for birdie on 15, a 14-footer for birdie 16, a 17-footer for birdie on 17, and finished in dramatic fashion with a 25-footer for birdie on 18 to the roars of the crowd.
Second in the Valero Texas Open in April, Kim’s best finish in 12 tournaments since was 17th, and he missed four cuts, including the past three weeks at the British Open, Scottish Open and John Deere Classic.
His 12-under par 59 on Friday vaulted him to the top of the leaderboard at -14.
The previous course record at TPC Twin Cities had been 60, held by a few players including Paul Goydos (2017), Daniel Gale (2023), Adam Svensson (2025), and Kurt Kitayama (2025) who was last year's 3M Open champ.
Scheffler, by the way, is just teeing off at 12:44 p.m. for his afternoon round in Blaine.
