Since the death of George Floyd, members of the Minneapolis North High School football team went through much adversity, dealing with violence, police mistrust, and the shooting death of their starting quarterback.

And it's all on tape.

The opening segment of "Boys in Blue" has already dropped on Showtime's website, and it airs on the network Friday night.

"It highlights our community, it highlights us as a football team, as a family," said offensive coordinator Ricky Plunkett on the Morning News with Vineeta Sawkar.

"It highlights (that) as a family, we can grow and we can spread out and show community, that we can come together, men leading other men, can also lead to community being a great thing," he said.

The story originally centered on the team and their followers reacted to Floyd's death and the violent demonstrations against Minneapolis police.

The team's head coach is Charles Adams, who's also an MPD officer.

It was several months after the season, Feb. 9, 2022, when Deshaun Hill was shot and killed while walking to a bus stop.

The documentary's producer came back to the Twin Cities to talk with the players, coaches, and people in the area about Hill's death.

Those interviews are in the fourth, and final, segment.

Hill was among the players featured during the first three parts.

"In his own special way, in a quiet way, before he died, he brought the team together," said Plunkett. "Knowing him, and knowing his heart, and knowing how he would love things, it brought us together as a team because we did it for him."

An arrest was made in Hill's shooting and trial is scheduled to start Jan. 17 in Hennepin County Court.
