The Twin Cities is getting ready to host thousands of fans and athletes for the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games this weekend.
The event officially kicks off with an opening ceremony at Huntington Bank Stadium, bringing nearly 3,000 athletes from all 50 states.
"We're so fortunate to have these games in Minnesota," VP of communications Molly Gallatin says. "You know, these games switch locations every four years. It's the first time Special Olympic Games of any kind have been here since 1991. Those were the World Summer Games. This has evolved now, these are the USA Games."
She says the next week will be filled with athletic competitions, specialized healthcare clinics, and career fairs.
The competitions will be held at the University of Minnesota, the National Sports Center, and the Mall of America featuring 16 Olympic-style sports, fan festivals, and volunteer-led medical clinics that will happen across the next week.
Gallatin says nearly 200 homegrown athletes will be participating in the games too.
"I don't know the total breakdown for other states, but I know that Minnesota has the largest number, and that's purposeful," says Gallatin. "We want fans to come out and cheer them on as much as possible and really help Minnesota win as many medals as possible."
She says they are anticipating a massive turnout for the games.
The opening ceremony on Saturday will feature musical performances from Demi Lovato and Jon Batiste.
