Minnesota Twins fans listening to the radio this week will hear a different voice calling play-by-play. It's a list that is full of legends and a member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
Longtime St. Paul Saints broadcaster Sean Aronson will call six games for the Twins this week while the Twins' main play-by-play voice Kris Atteberry is out of the booth. He's been behind the mic for the Saints since 2007. Ironically, he took over Saints broadcast duties from Atteberry.
Aronson told WCCO Radio's Steve Thomson that broadcasting Major League Baseball will be a dream come true after 24 years in the business.
"You know, hopefully Twins fans will enjoy what I can bring to the table for six days," Aronson explained. "As I've told everybody, I'm not Kris Atteberry, I'm not Corey Provus, I can only be myself and I've been doing this for 24 years. I plan on bringing who I am to to the table and just keeping the seat warm for Kris when he comes back after the All-Star break."
Still, for Aronson, it is the opportunity of a lifetime.
"Kris and I talked and Kris said something that I will not forget," said Aronson. "He said when you sit in that booth for the first game of the first inning against the White Sox, and that first pitch is thrown, you'll forever be able to call yourself a major league broadcaster. And it really hit me. I mean, it hit me hard when he said that."
The list of Twins broadcasters is full of talent and legendary radio voices, something that Aronson now gets to be a part of: Halsey Hall, Herb Carneal (Hall of Fame), John Gordon, Dan Gladden and, of course, Provus (now doing TV), and Atteberry.
Getting ready for the jump to the big leagues meant some extra homework for Aronson as well. He said he began prepping for the six games two weeks ago.
"I'm a storyteller type of broadcaster," Aronson says. "Again, that's a school that I went to, if you will, by listening to Vin Scully. And I believe all these players have some interesting facts and notes and stories about them. My goal is to tell those stories."
Aronson will call games as the Twins face the White Sox and Giants, all on the road this coming week. You'll hear Aronson's call of the Twins and Sox for the first time Monday night on WCCO Radio and the Audacy App (in-market restrictions apply). Pregame begins at 6:30 p.m. with first pitch scheduled for 7:10 from the South Side.
