The Twins on Saturday placed infielder Royce Lewis on the 10-day injured list with a right quad strain.
Team officials call the injury "severe," and Lewis is not expected to play again until mid-May at the earliest.
Lewis was hurt during Thursday's season-opening win at Kansas City while running the bases.
He had a home run and a single before leaving the game in the third inning.
The move is retroactive to March 29, with Lewis scheduled to return to the Twin Cities while the rest of the team heads to Milwaukee for a two-game series.
Taking Lewis' place on the roster is taken by utility player Austin Martin, who was set to begin the season on Saturday in St. Paul for the Saints, the Twins' AAA affiliate.
Instead, Martin makes his way to Kansas City for Saturday's 3:10 p.m. start.
Martin will be making his major league debut when he enters a game.
He was acquired from Toronto at the trading deadline on July 30, 2021 in the deal that sent pitcher Jose Berrios to the Blue Jays.
Also coming to the Twins in that trade was pitcher Simeon Woods Richardson, who made his major league debut last season.
This is not the first time Lewis has been bothered by injuries since the Twins made him the top overall pick in the 2017 major league draft.
He has had major surgery on his right knee on two occasions.
The first cost him the entire 2021 season, the second came just days after he made his major league debut.
On Sept. 22 2023, a left hamstring injury sent him to the injured list, limiting his role to designated hitter in the Twins' playoff run.
Those injuries have interrupted what has been a spectacular start to his major league career.
Lewis last season hit four grand slams, two of them in consecutive games and all within a period of 18 games.
His first career home run came in 2022, and that was also with the bases loaded.
Add to that home runs in his first two postseason at-bats.
And, just for good measure, Lewis hit a grand slam during the recently completed Grapefruit League season.
In 71 career major league games, Lewis is hitting .313 with 18 home runs and 58 runs batted in.
The righthanded batter has a whopping career .933 OPS.
The Twins wrap up their first series of the 2024 season with games Saturday and Sunday in Kansas City, then travel to Milwaukee for a two-game set with the Brewers starting Tuesday.
Sunshine and temperatures in the high 50's are in the forecast for the Twins' home opener against Cleveland at Target Field.
