Are the Twins actually considering trading Carlos Correa? It appears the answer is - maybe.
There's speculation across Major League Baseball that Correa's old team, the Houston Astros, are considering a move to bring Correa back. That was first reported by USA Today and confirmed by MLB.com.
That potential is not without major complications. First and most complicated is Correa having a no-trade clause in his contract. That contract is worth $36 million this year, and he is owed $92 million over the next three seasons, part of a six-year, $200 million deal he signed with the Twins as a free agent.
There's no doubt any deal for Correa would come with stipulations that the Twins pay a significant portion of his salary.
At least one report, from USA Today's Bob Nightengale, says Correa is saying he would waive the no-trade clause for Houston. Correa is on record as saying he "loves Minnesota" and doesn't want to leave - although he mentioned fishing as the reason.
Correa, by the way, is out of the Twins’ lineup Wednesday. He left Tuesday’s game feeling light-headed.
But it's also time to look at Correa's production versus salary, and at least in 2025, it's not pretty. Call it a down year, but Correa has not generated as much offense as the 30-year old star is used to. He's hitting .267 but with only 7 home runs and 31 runs batted it. Correa's 93 OPS+ is far below his career average of 126 OPS+ and below the league average.
There have been some injury concerns with plantar fasciitis and Correa's feet/ankles. But despite sitting out Wednesday's game, he's been relatively healthy this year outside of a collision with Byron Buxton led to a concussion, and a minor sprained ankle recently.
Of course the reason the Twins are leaning into moving some players is because they've struggled. The Twins are now five games below .500 going into Wednesday's game against Boston. They're a very distant 11 games back of AL Central-leading Detroit (and fourth in the division), plus they are 5.5 games out of the AL Wild Card race with several teams they'd have to leapfrog.
All of that makes the postseason pretty unlikely, and probably makes the Twins sellers.
They've already moved pending free agent pitcher Chris Paddack to Detroit for a young prospect (Randy Dobnak was also included). There's considerable chatter around the Twins shopping relievers Griffen Jax, Danny Coulombe and Jhoan Duran. In fact, Nightengale tweeted Wednesday afternoon that the Twins would likely move Duran "by the end of the day" with the Dodgers and Phillies the most likely landing spots for the flame throwing closer.
Currently on a one-year deal (with a player-club mutual option in '26), it wouldn't come as a shock if the Twins try to move outfielder Harrison Bader since he's likely leaving after this season anyway.
There's also starter and All-Star Joe Ryan, who would clearly require a big return for the Twins to part with, but there are also some needy teams out there who might throw a big package at president of baseball operations Derek Falvey.
The trade deadline is Thursday at 5:00 p.m. Central time if the Twins are going to make another move.
